Talk entitled 'Sir Roger Manwood and the Strangers of Elizabethan England' on Thursday 13th March. Professor Alan Stewart, a professor of Comparative Literature at Columbia University, New York, documents how the strangers were given royal approval to settle in Sandwich, a complex mixture of commercial and confessional issues. Connected to the migration are the foundation of Roger Manwood’s school and the town’s appeal for state funds to dredge the silting harbour.
Come along to the Jury Room at The Guildhall, Sandwich from 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Non-members are very welcome – just £2 at the door.
